Teresa Ribera, the European Union's competition chief, has clarified that the EU's enforcement of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) against major American technology companies such as Apple, Meta, and Google is not being used as leverage in trade negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump. Ribera emphasized that the EU will not compromise its sovereignty or allow U.S. interference in the implementation of the DMA, which has so far disproportionately targeted large American tech firms. She also highlighted the importance of regulatory dialogue between the EU and the U.S. Ribera further stated that there are no plans to require big tech companies to bear the costs of complying with the digital law. The EU's stance underscores its commitment to enforcing its competition rules independently of trade discussions and without shifting compliance costs onto the tech companies.
