A recent YouGov study reveals a decline in support for democracy among Europe's Generation Z, defined as individuals aged 16 to 26. Only 57% of young Europeans now consider democracy the best form of government, a decrease from 70% in 2021. In countries such as France, Spain, and Poland, this figure falls below 52%. Additionally, around 21% of young Europeans express that authoritarian rule is acceptable under certain circumstances. The study also highlights growing skepticism toward traditional political institutions and an increasing perception among 48% of young Europeans that democracy is under threat in their countries. This trend coincides with rising polarization and euro-skepticism among the youth. The findings indicate a shift in political attitudes within Europe's younger generation, raising concerns about the future engagement with democratic governance across the continent.
