A recent series of studies and surveys reveal a declining confidence in democracy among Europe's Generation Z, defined as individuals aged 16 to 26. Across seven European countries, only 57% of young people consider democracy the best form of government, a decrease from 70% in 2021. In countries such as France, Spain, and Poland, support for democracy falls below 52%. Additionally, approximately 21% of young Europeans express acceptance of authoritarian rule under certain circumstances. The trend is accompanied by widespread dissatisfaction with current democratic institutions, feelings of insecurity, and a desire for more efficient governance and stronger European Union integration. In Italy, one in four young people reportedly favors an authoritarian government. These findings highlight growing political skepticism and a potential shift in attitudes towards governance models among Europe's youth.
