A 13-year-old boy was killed and four other minors aged 13 to 15 were injured early Thursday when their Peugeot 308 left the D980 road in Gourdon, near Montceau-les-Mines, and struck a tree, according to the Saône-et-Loire prefecture and the Chalon-sur-Saône prosecutor’s office. The crash occurred around 5 a.m. after the driver, 15, refused to comply with a police check and the vehicle was subsequently followed at a distance with lights activated, police union representative Stéphan Ragonneau said. Prosecutors said the car, apparently taken from the parents of one of the teenagers, was found in a ditch with no immediate contact having occurred between officers and the vehicle. The four survivors were taken to local hospitals; none is in life-threatening condition, though one was initially reported in serious state and required extrication. Toxicology tests on the driver are pending, and an investigation has been opened to determine the precise sequence of events leading to the fatal accident.
