Olympique Lyonnais will remain in France’s Ligue 1 next season after the French football financial watchdog DNCG accepted the club’s appeal against an earlier administrative relegation. Newly installed president Michele Kang said Lyon “met the requirements” on cash flow, fresh liquidity and guarantees, satisfying a DNCG demand for roughly €200 million in assurances. The decision preserves Lyon’s place in domestic and Europa League competitions and extends the club’s top-flight run to a 37th year. The reprieve comes with strict conditions. The DNCG has placed the club under formal limits on its wage bill and transfer spending, a regime that French media say will oblige management to offload high-earning players. Kang, who took over from American businessman John Textor, pledged full transparency while chief executive Michael Gerlinger said the sporting objective remains European qualification despite the financial straitjacket. Textor, speaking on UK radio, blamed the DNCG for Lyon’s difficulties and acknowledged transferring funds from his Brazilian side Botafogo to bolster the French club. He also said Eagle Football Holdings' debt levels had “hardly gone up” since the 2023 takeover, but conceded that supporters see him as “very much the issue.” The ownership group must now balance its multi-club ambitions with the tighter oversight imposed on its flagship French team.
