Macron: Territorial issues will only be negotiated by Zelensky.
French President Emmanuel Macron said territorial questions arising from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “cannot and will not be negotiated by anyone other than President Volodymyr Zelensky.” Macron disclosed the position on 13 August after a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to French media reports. The declaration comes 48 hours before Trump is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks expected to focus on ways to end the war. Trump has previously floated the idea that Kyiv might cede some land to Moscow as part of a settlement, a proposal rejected by Ukraine and most European allies. Macron’s remarks reinforce the longstanding Western stance that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be decided solely by its elected leadership. The French leader said Paris would continue to support Kyiv diplomatically and militarily while urging Russia to halt its offensive operations.
