British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have reached an agreement on a "one in, one out" pilot migration deal aimed at addressing the issue of illegal crossings of the English Channel by small boats. The deal, announced during Macron's state visit to the UK, establishes that for every migrant returned to France after arriving illegally in the UK, a different individual with a legitimate asylum claim will be allowed to enter the UK via safe and legal routes. The pilot scheme is expected to launch within weeks and initially will see the UK returning approximately 2,600 migrants annually to France, representing around 6% of the total arrivals. Macron emphasized the shared responsibility between the UK and France to tackle illegal migration and highlighted the need to address the pull factors encouraging dangerous crossings. The agreement follows months of negotiations and is described by Starmer as "groundbreaking." It still requires approval from the European Union. The deal aims to reduce the burden on both countries and improve cooperation on migration management, with a joint summit planned to deliver tangible results. Earlier, King Charles expressed a message of "no borders" between the UK and France, underscoring the close relationship amid ongoing migration challenges.
