Gaudreau Widows Launch Foundation Honoring Late NHL Brothers
The widows of hockey brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau used a nationally televised interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America” to announce the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation, a charity supporting youth hockey programs and families affected by drunk-driving tragedies. The segment aired on Aug. 13, which would have been Johnny Gaudreau’s 32nd birthday. Johnny, a 31-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets forward, and Matthew, 29, a former professional player and aspiring coach, were killed on Aug. 29, 2024, when an alleged drunk driver struck them as they bicycled near their family home in New Jersey. The driver was arrested and has pleaded not guilty to aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, evidence tampering and leaving the scene of an accident. Meredith and Madeline Gaudreau said they spent the past year designing the foundation to reflect the brothers’ commitment to youth hockey and community service. Early donations have already been accepted, and several NHL colleagues have directed wedding-gift contributions to the fund. The launch comes as the families prepare for the first anniversary of the crash, which left the widows caring for four children, two of whom were born after their fathers’ deaths.
