On August 20, 2025, the Indian government, led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, introduced three key bills in the Lok Sabha aimed at amending constitutional and administrative provisions. These include the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill proposes the removal of a Prime Minister, Union minister, Chief Minister, or state/Union Territory minister if they are arrested or detained on serious criminal charges for 30 consecutive days, effectively ending political proxy rule. The bills were met with strong opposition from several members of Parliament, including Congress MPs Manish Tewari and Renuka Chowdhury, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, RJD MP Manoj Jha, and TMC MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mitali Bagh, who described the bills as unconstitutional, draconian, and destructive to the basic structure of the Constitution. Protests in the Lok Sabha included the tearing and throwing of bill copies towards Amit Shah, leading to the House being adjourned multiple times. Despite opposition demands for more discussion and concerns over the bills being introduced hastily without prior circulation, the government proposed and secured a motion to refer all three bills to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further examination. The JPC will include members from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, representing ruling and opposition parties. The introduction of these bills sparked heated debates and disruptions in Parliament, with Congress and other opposition parties accusing the government of undermining democracy and federal structure. The session also saw protests related to other issues such as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and demands for OBC reservation, reflecting ongoing political tensions ahead of elections.
