The Supreme Court of India is currently hearing multiple pleas concerning the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Chief Justice of India BR highlighted the importance of considering the ground situation, referencing the events in Pahalgam. Various political leaders from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have expressed their views during the hearings. BJP leaders, including J&K BJP President Sat Sharma and BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa, reiterated that statehood will be granted when the appropriate circumstances arise, emphasizing the Prime Minister's assurances. Congress leaders, including J&K Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra and JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah, stressed the urgency of restoring statehood and holding elections, recalling Supreme Court directives following the removal of Article 370. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has also directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to publicly display on district electoral officer websites the list of approximately 6.5 million persons excluded or deleted from Bihar's draft electoral voters list, along with reasons for their removal. This move aims to enhance transparency in the ongoing Special Summary Revision (SSR) or SIR exercise. The SIR process has sparked controversy and allegations of voter suppression and vote theft, with opposition leaders from Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and others criticizing the exercise. Congress leaders such as Pawan Khera, Digvijay Singh, and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring have condemned the deletions as undermining democracy and have called for accountability from the Election Commission and the ruling BJP. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and MP Manoj Jha emphasized their continued opposition to the SIR exercise, highlighting the Supreme Court's involvement as a critical step. BJP, however, has accused opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Akhilesh Yadav of winning seats through fraudulent voter rolls, demanding resignations amid the vote-related disputes. The Supreme Court's directives and the political responses underscore the ongoing tensions surrounding electoral integrity and statehood status in India.
