A local cricket match in Siliguri’s Bagrakot neighbourhood on 9 July descended into large-scale violence after an argument between supporters of the Tikiapara (Ward 18) and Bagrakot (Ward 20) teams. Witnesses said rival groups hurled stones, vandalised property and set vehicles on fire, turning the residential area into a conflict zone. Police rushed to the scene but also came under attack, prompting officers to fire tear-gas shells and conduct baton charges to disperse the crowd. Several police vans and private vehicles were torched before order was partially restored. Authorities have detained a number of participants and deployed additional security forces to prevent further unrest. Officials have not yet released figures on injuries or arrests, and the precise trigger for the clash is still under investigation. The violence has rattled Siliguri—normally one of West Bengal’s quieter urban centres—raising concerns of broader communal tension if the situation is not quickly defused.
