HDFC Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sashidhar Jagdishan has asked the Supreme Court of India to quash a first-information report lodged by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, which manages Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital. A bench led by Justices M.M. Sundresh and K. Vinod Chandran agreed on Thursday to hear the petition on 4 July after Jagdishan sought urgent relief against possible coercive action. The trust’s complaint, registered with Bandra police on a magistrate’s order dated 29 May, accuses Jagdishan of accepting ₹2.05 crore in payments between March 2022 and June 2023 to help an external group retain undue control over the charitable institution. Police have booked the banker and others for alleged cheating and criminal breach of trust under sections 406, 409 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code. Represented by Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, Jagdishan argues the allegations are “frivolous” and aimed at obstructing HDFC Bank’s attempt to recover longstanding loans from individuals linked to the trust. He told the court that multiple Bombay High Court judges had recused themselves, causing delays, and that the High Court has only slated the case for 14 July. The Supreme Court will decide whether the FIR should stand or be dismissed.
