The Supreme Court administration has formally requested the Indian government to reclaim the official residence allocated to former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, citing that he has overstayed beyond the permissible period. According to the administration's letter to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the retention permission for the bungalow ended on May 31, 2025, and the six-month grace period under Rule 3B of the 2002 rules has expired. The court has urged the government to take back the residence without delay. Sources from the ex-CJI's office indicated that the alternative accommodation offered was in poor condition, requiring major repairs and lacking wheelchair accessibility. Chandrachud responded to the Supreme Court's request by citing personal reasons for the extended stay, specifically mentioning the need for an ICU setup for his daughter and ongoing renovations at his new residence. He has stated that vacating the bungalow is a matter of 10 to 15 days. As of July 7, 2025, Chandrachud has packed his luggage and is preparing to move out of the official residence.
