The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding regions including Thane, Raigad, Navi Mumbai, Ratnagiri, and Palghar due to torrential rains expected over a 48-hour period. The heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding and waterlogging, disrupting daily life and transportation. Mumbai has received approximately 300mm of rainfall, leading to at least one confirmed death and injuries in the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for private offices and establishments except essential services. Government offices, schools, and colleges have been closed, and train operations have been affected. Indigo Airlines issued a travel advisory citing delays caused by waterlogged routes to the airport. The water level of the Mithi River has reached around 3.1-3.2 meters, raising concerns about further flooding. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar visited the disaster control room to assess the situation. In addition to Mumbai, heavy rains have impacted other parts of Maharashtra, including Bhiwandi where the Kamvari River water level has risen, and Nanded district where flooding led to the rescue of 300 people by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), although 5-6 fatalities were reported in Hasnad village. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed loss of life and property due to the extreme weather conditions, with SDRF and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel deployed for relief efforts.
