Karachi has been severely affected by heavy monsoon rains on August 19, 2025, leading to widespread urban flooding and disruption of essential services. Major roads including Shahrah-e-Faisal and Chandrigar Road have been submerged, causing significant traffic paralysis and stranding numerous residents. The flooding has exposed longstanding drainage issues, which remain unresolved despite 17 years of governance by the Pakistan Peoples Party in Sindh. Approximately 50% of Karachi's population experienced power outages, with over 1,000 electrical feeders shut down and multiple mobile towers losing generator fuel due to prolonged load shedding. Emergency services responded to incidents including a fire at nearly 15 petrol stations in Malir and a wall collapse near Rado Bakery in Gulistan-e-Johar, resulting in four fatalities. Internet and mobile services were also disrupted citywide. In response, Sindh's Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah declared a public holiday for Karachi on August 20 and ordered schools to remain closed. The mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, visited affected areas and assured that rainwater drainage would be expedited, noting that rainwater channels are clear. The Sindh government issued safety instructions urging residents to stay indoors amid the ongoing emergency. Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, India, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led emergency efforts in Thane and Mumbai, where over 300 mm of rainfall in 24 hours caused severe flooding, stranded commuters, and disrupted rail and airport operations, including delays of over 250 flights at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Central Railway canceled 14 long-distance trains due to waterlogging. The heavy rains have also impacted quick commerce and food delivery businesses in Mumbai.
