Torrential monsoon rains have inundated Pakistan’s commercial hub Karachi, killing at least 10 people through electrocution and building collapses and forcing the provincial government to declare a public holiday. Up to 235 millimetres of rain fell in parts of the city within 12 hours—far above the drainage system’s 40-millimetre capacity—leaving major arteries such as Shahrah-e-Faisal and roads near Jinnah International Airport under water, halting traffic and cancelling numerous flights. The deluge triggered widespread power outages, with utility K-Electric still struggling to restore supply after 24 hours, and paralysed public transport as several train services were scrapped. Karachi’s emergency helpline at the Governor House was swamped with complaints about inundated homes and stalled vehicles. Thirty employees were rescued from a flooded call centre in PECHS, while army engineers, Rangers and air-force helicopters worked to clear roads and evacuate residents from low-lying districts. Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the storm drains had been overwhelmed by a ‘historic downpour’, noting that Manghopir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed and the airport area each received more than 200 mm of rain. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif telephoned the Sindh chief minister to offer federal assistance, and rescue teams remained on alert as the Meteorological Department warned of another strong weather system over the next two days. Elsewhere in the country, a cloudburst in Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa raised the local death toll to 28, including 20 members of a single family, and damaged scores of houses. The PDMA KP said flood-related fatalities this monsoon have reached 368 in the province. The air force has launched large-scale relief operations in Gilgit-Baltistan, while the NDMA cautioned that urban flooding could intensify nationwide through early September.
