On July 1, 2025, the Union Cabinet of India, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the National Sports Policy 2025, also known as Khelo Bharat Niti 2025. This policy marks the first comprehensive update in 24 years and aims to transform India's sporting landscape by fostering a holistic ecosystem that integrates physical literacy, fitness culture, infrastructure, talent identification, athlete welfare, coaching improvements, and sports science. The policy is anchored on five key pillars, including excellence on the global stage and leveraging sports for economic growth. It envisions India becoming a top-five global sporting nation and lays the foundation for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. The initiative emphasizes inclusivity, ensuring no talent is left behind, and promotes private sector collaboration to expand infrastructure, increase athlete funding, and professionalize sports management. Additionally, the policy seeks to align with the National Education Policy to integrate sports as a core component of education. It also highlights sports as a driver for nation-building, innovation, employment, and entrepreneurship, aiming to build a fitter, stronger, and more athletic India. Union ministers, including Ashwini Vaishnaw, and state leaders have praised the policy as a transformative and historic step towards empowering citizens and boosting India's global sports ambitions.
