India’s Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to urgently hear a petition seeking diplomatic intervention to stop the execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to death in Yemen for the 2017 murder of a Yemeni national. A bench led by Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia listed the matter for 14 July, two days before Priya’s execution date of 16 July. The court also issued notice to the Attorney General, requesting the government’s response on steps it can take through diplomatic channels. The plea, filed by the non-profit Save Nimisha Priya Action Council, argues that the Centre should open negotiations with Yemeni authorities and the victim’s family, including the option of paying ‘blood money’ permitted under Sharia law. Counsel for the NGO warned that the narrow window before 16 July leaves little time for any potential talks if the government does not act immediately.
