Former students of Alliance Girls High School held peaceful protests at the school in Kiambu over allegations of sexual abuse by a male teacher, Peter Ayiro. The protests called for an immediate investigation by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) into the claims. Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok confirmed plans to interdict, arrest, and prosecute Ayiro, who is accused of grooming and engaging in sexual relations with students. The school management has appointed a team to investigate the allegations. Psychologists and gender experts highlighted that grooming in schools often goes unreported due to fear and stigma, with students aged 13 to 17 being particularly vulnerable. The National Gender and Equality Commission CEO, Dr. Purity Ngina, noted that while policies and training on abuse exist, victims are often unfairly blamed. Subsequently, the TSC suspended the teacher pending the outcome of the investigations.

Dr. Purity Ngina – CEO, National Gender and Equality Commission: There are policies in place, and teachers have received training in guidance and counseling from the MoE about abuse in schools.
