U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on all goods imported from India, a rate markedly higher than the duties Washington currently applies to shipments from the European Union, Japan and South Korea. The White House did not immediately specify when the levy will take effect, but trade lawyers said it appears to be part of the sweeping tariff schedule the administration updated on 31 July. The move threatens to upend supply chains that global companies have built in India. Market analysts estimate Apple could take a one-time hit of about $1.1 billion if it is forced to re-route or scale back iPhone production aimed at the U.S. market. The surcharge may also complicate New Delhi’s “Make in India” manufacturing drive, which has attracted investments from electronics, pharmaceutical and automotive firms looking to diversify beyond China. Indian officials have yet to detail a formal response, but local media reported “shock, dismay and angst” after Trump publicly dismissed India’s economy as “dead” and said he “doesn’t care” about its ties with Russia. SBI Research, the economics arm of India’s largest lender, argued the tariff could end up hurting American consumers and manufacturers more than Indian exporters because supply chains have already begun pivoting to Europe, West Asia and Southeast Asia. The India-specific action is the latest escalation in Trump’s broader tariff campaign, which now ranges from a 10% blanket duty on most countries to punitive rates exceeding 40% on economies such as Syria and Laos. Trade analysts warn the disparate levels risk further friction with partners Washington counts on to counter China, even as U.S. inflationary pressures remain elevated.
A fundamental change seems to be happening to US-India relations under Trump… unless he is bluffing as a temporary negotiation tactic. But as Trump said on social media, “Words have consequences.” #Russia https://t.co/URwUaR1B0r
Russia has been a loyal friend to India in the past. Russia will be a key strategic partner for India’s economy/military in the future. Trump’s attempt to drive a wedge between India & Russia is futile. Plus, US needs India to contain China, even if only in limited ways. https://t.co/0OizVwBdqy
President Trump may not care about India when he wanted to impose 25% tariffs and said "I don't care what India does with Russia" "they can take their dead economies down together, for all I care". Given President Trump's push for US AI dominance, India is NOT what he thinks! https://t.co/8sBYjqlHP1
