On August 25, 2025, a large-scale demonstration titled "Revolusi Rakyat Indonesia" took place in front of the Indonesian Parliament building (Gedung DPR/MPR RI) in Senayan, Central Jakarta. The protest, primarily involving students and civil society groups, was aimed at opposing the salaries and allowances of parliamentarians. The demonstration escalated into clashes between protesters, including high school students, and police forces. Riot police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd after protesters attempted to breach the parliament gates, which had been fortified with four-meter-high iron fences smeared with black oil. Several protesters were injured, with some lying in front of the main gate after being pushed back by police. Authorities arrested 351 people during the unrest, including 196 minors, many of whom were later released. The government apologized for disruptions to public services caused by the protests. The day after the riots, conditions in affected areas such as Pejompongan and Jalan Penjernihan began to normalize. In response to the demonstrations, members of parliament started using civilian license plates on their vehicles. The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs indicated it would summon social media platforms TikTok and Meta, citing the role of live broadcasts on TikTok in provoking the unrest. The Indonesian Child Protection Commission urged schools and education authorities not to expel students detained during the protests. Additionally, the Jakarta Environment Agency reported that the demonstrations generated 18.72 tons of waste. Meanwhile, protests continued in other regions, including a demonstration by hundreds of students at the North Sumatra Regional Parliament (DPRD Sumut) in Medan, where protesters symbolically criticized lawmakers with banners and cardboard boxes containing rats labeled with party stickers. The Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, affirmed that the right to protest is protected by law, while another Deputy Speaker, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, condemned actions that damaged public property and blocked roads during the demonstrations. Political communication experts advised lawmakers to respond appropriately and proportionally to public dissent expressed through protests. Further demonstrations were planned, including an anticipated rally by approximately 10,000 workers in Jakarta on August 28, 2025.
