Magnitude 6.0 Quake in Indonesia’s Sulawesi Injures 29
A magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck Poso Regency in Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi province early Sunday, injuring at least 29 people, two of them critically, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The quake hit at a depth of roughly 10 kilometres and was felt across neighbouring districts, sending residents fleeing buildings during morning church services and damaging at least one place of worship. BNPB said there were no immediate reports of fatalities or of a tsunami threat. Local authorities are continuing damage assessments and have transferred the most seriously hurt to Poso Regional Hospital, while additional teams coordinate shelter and medical support for affected communities. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making the archipelago one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions.
