Two students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) died after the boat they were on capsized in the waters of Debut, Southeast Maluku, on July 1, 2025. The victims, Bagus Adi Prayogo, 22, from the Faculty of Forestry, and Septian Eka Rahmadi, a participant in the KKN-PPM community service program, were part of a group conducting a Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program. The incident occurred when their longboat, which was transporting sand for the KKN activities, was overturned by rough weather near Pulau Wearhu. The search and rescue team confirmed the recovery of both students' bodies. UGM expressed condolences over the loss. The families of the deceased are arranging for the repatriation of the bodies to their hometowns in Sumbawa and Bojonegoro. Local authorities, including the Southeast Maluku Police Chief AKBP Frans Duma, provided details on the accident, emphasizing the adverse weather conditions as the cause. The incident has drawn condolences from the UGM alumni community in Maluku province and the regional governor, who hopes for a smooth process in returning the bodies.
