Italian rider Samuele Privitera died late Wednesday after crashing during the opening stage of the 61st Giro Ciclistico della Valle d’Aosta – Mont Blanc, one of Europe’s premier under-23 races. The 19-year-old, who competed for the Hagens Berman Jayco development squad, came off his bicycle on a fast descent near the town of Pontey, roughly 35 kilometres from the finish line. Initial reports indicate the peloton was travelling at close to 70 km/h when Privitera lost control, apparently shed his helmet and struck roadside barriers. Race medical staff performed resuscitation at the scene before an ambulance transferred him to Umberto Parini Hospital in Aosta, where he succumbed to severe head injuries and cardiac arrest the same evening. Organisers cancelled Thursday’s 10.5-kilometre time-trial in Passy and said the race will resume on Friday with a minute’s silence, while giving teams the option to withdraw. Public-safety authorities have opened an inquiry into the exact cause of the accident. Privitera was regarded as one of Italy’s most promising prospects, having claimed a stage podium at the 2024 Giro Next Gen and made his professional debut earlier this year at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali. “Samuele was irreplaceable,” Axel Merckx, general manager of Hagens Berman Jayco, said in a statement, adding that his rider’s death has left the team “devastated beyond words.”
