A fire broke out aboard the USS New Orleans, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, while the vessel was moored near the White Beach Naval Facility in Uruma, Okinawa, around 5 p.m. local time on 20 Aug. The ship is forward-deployed with the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group and operates under the US Navy’s 7th Fleet. Crews from the US Navy, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Japan Coast Guard battled the blaze from both the ship and surrounding firefighting boats. Local authorities said no injuries have been reported among the approximately 360 personnel typically assigned to the vessel. The extent of damage and the cause of the fire have not yet been determined. According to the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, civilian vessels assisting in the initial response were instructed to withdraw after the Navy indicated the ship carried hazardous materials. An investigation has been opened by the US Navy.
