Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi departs this evening for a two-day trip to Japan, where he will hold the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit with Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba on 29–30 August. The visit is Modi’s first standalone trip to Japan in nearly seven years and marks his eighth since taking office in 2014. Ishiba is expected to unveil a ¥10 trillion ($68 billion) plan to deepen business ties with India over the next decade, with investments spanning artificial intelligence, semiconductors and high-value manufacturing. The package aligns with Modi’s “Make in India, Make for the World” campaign, which seeks to position the country as a global manufacturing hub. Officials said the leaders will sign multiple memorandums of understanding and release several outcome documents. The programme includes travel outside Tokyo and meetings with corporate executives, underscoring a focus on supply-chain resilience, critical minerals and expanded Japanese participation in Indian projects. Cooperation within the Quad security grouping is also on the agenda. Modi’s stop in Tokyo kicks off a broader Asia tour that will take him to China and Russia, as New Delhi looks to diversify economic partnerships amid elevated U.S. tariffs on Asian exports. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the round of high-level diplomacy aims to launch “several new initiatives” while strengthening India’s role in the regional economy.
