Kenyan blogger and activist Ndiangui Kinyagia disappeared on June 21, 2025, amid protests linked to the Gen-Z movement, sparking widespread concern and allegations of police involvement. The High Court, led by Justice Chacha Mwita, ordered Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohammed Amin to produce Kinyagia or explain his whereabouts. The police and DCI denied holding Kinyagia, stating he was a person of interest in an ongoing investigation and urging him to surrender. Despite court orders, the police failed to produce Kinyagia, requesting more time to search for him. On July 3, 2025, Kinyagia resurfaced in court, accompanied by his lawyers, stating he had gone into hiding for fear of arrest, not abduction as alleged. He appeared visibly traumatized and requested safety guarantees. The High Court barred police from arresting or detaining him pending further hearings scheduled for July 18 and 24, 2025. The National Police Service dismissed claims of abduction, warning against staged abductions and false information. Following his court appearance, Kinyagia was summoned to the DCI headquarters to record a statement. The case remains under judicial scrutiny as authorities continue investigations.
