Kenyan authorities arrested Naivasha Member of Parliament Jayne Njeri Wanjiku Kihara on Thursday after she failed to respond to a summons from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Plain-clothes and uniformed officers detained the lawmaker at her Maraigushu home in Nakuru County and transported her to Naivasha Police Station, according to footage she livestreamed on social media. The DCI had ordered Kihara to appear at its Nairobi headquarters on 15 July to answer questions about statements investigators consider inciteful and undermining the authority of a public officer. The summons, signed by Assistant Inspector General George Lenny Kisaka, warned that non-compliance constituted an offence. Kihara publicly rejected the notice, accusing the government of using security agencies to intimidate political figures aligned with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Police are expected to transfer the legislator to DCI headquarters in the capital for formal questioning. Her arrest heightens tensions within the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition, where some members claim they are being targeted for shifting political loyalties.
