The High Court of Kenya nullified President William Ruto's initial appointment of Erastus Edung Ethekon as chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and six commissioners due to violation of a court order and an unconstitutional appointment process. Despite this, the court dismissed a substantive petition seeking to invalidate the IEBC appointments and gave President Ruto a window to regularize the appointments. Subsequently, President Ruto re-gazetted the appointments of Erastus Edung Ethekon and six commissioners—Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Arphat Abdallah—for a six-year term. The new IEBC team was sworn in on July 11, 2025, at the Supreme Court in Nairobi, with Chief Justice Martha Koome presiding over the ceremony. Chairperson Ethekon pledged to lead the commission with loyalty to the Kenyan people, assuring free, fair, and credible elections in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The swearing-in ended a two-year leadership stalemate at the electoral body, and the IEBC is now fully constituted and ready to serve.
