The High Court of Kenya nullified President William Ruto's initial appointment of Erastus Edung Ethekon as Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and six commissioners, citing a breach of an interim court order that halted their gazettement and an unconstitutional appointment process. Despite this, the court dismissed a substantive petition seeking to invalidate the appointments and provided the President with an opportunity to regularize the process. Subsequently, President Ruto re-gazetted the appointments, confirming Erastus Edung Ethekon as IEBC Chairperson alongside commissioners Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Arphat Abdallah, all appointed for a six-year term. The new IEBC team was sworn in at the Supreme Court in Nairobi, with Chief Justice Martha Koome presiding over the ceremony. Chairperson Ethekon pledged to lead the commission with loyalty to the Kenyan people, emphasizing the commitment to free, fair, and credible elections ahead of the 2027 general elections. The swearing-in ended a two-year leadership stalemate at the electoral body, with Chief Justice Koome urging the new commissioners to begin preparations for the upcoming elections and to restore public confidence in the IEBC.
