Kenya's High Court nullified President William Ruto's initial appointment of Erastus Edung Ethekon as Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and six commissioners, citing violation of an interim court order and an unconstitutional appointment process. The court deemed the gazette notice formalizing these appointments unlawful but dismissed a substantive petition seeking to invalidate the appointments entirely. Following this, President Ruto re-gazetted the IEBC team, including Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon and commissioners Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Arphat Abdallah, all appointed for a six-year term. The High Court subsequently cleared their appointments, allowing the new IEBC chair and commissioners to be sworn in. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Supreme Court in Nairobi, presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome. During the event, Chairperson Ethekon pledged to lead the commission with loyalty to the Kenyan people, promising free, fair, and credible elections ahead of the 2027 general elections. Chief Justice Koome urged the IEBC team to restore public confidence and begin preparations for the upcoming elections. The IEBC announced that it is now fully constituted and ready to serve.
