Twelve Western embassies—including those of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands—have issued a joint statement welcoming President William Ruto’s appointment of a new leadership team for Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. The envoys said the selection of chair Erastus Edung Ethekon and six commissioners—Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol and Fahima Araphat Abdallah—was an important step toward reinforcing public trust in the country’s electoral system. The diplomats urged Kenya’s National Assembly and National Treasury to provide the commission with timely and adequate funding so it can plan and run transparent elections. They also called on state agencies to expand voter registration and pledged technical assistance to strengthen the IEBC’s operations ahead of the next national polls. The new chair and commissioners, sworn in on 11 July, will serve six-year terms.
