Kenyan President William Ruto has fulfilled his promise by disbursing Sh42 million to the Harambee Stars football team following their 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi noted that the government has a Sh70 million budget allocated for rewarding winners and that President Ruto supplements this with his own funds. Mwangi also mentioned plans to provide wealth management counseling to the players to help maintain their newfound millionaire status. Harambee Stars, coached by Benni McCarthy, secured a 1-1 draw against Angola in their second Group A match at Kasarani Stadium, despite playing with ten men after Marvin Nabwire was sent off in the 21st minute. The team is preparing for a crucial upcoming match against two-time champions Morocco, which could see them qualify directly for the CHAN quarterfinals if they win. The 2024 CHAN tournament features various African national teams competing across multiple venues, including Nairobi, Zanzibar, Kampala, and Dar es Salaam, with notable performances from players such as Abderrahmane Meziane of Algeria and Ahmed El Moctar of Mauritania, who earned Man of the Match awards in their respective games.
