Kenyan President William Ruto has warned that Members of Parliament and senators implicated in an alleged extortion racket dubbed “soko huru” will be arrested and prosecuted. Speaking at a coalition parliamentary group meeting in Nairobi on Monday, Ruto said intelligence reports show a governor paid KSh150 million to a Senate committee and that some MPs collected KSh10 million to secure passage of the Anti-Money Laundering Bill. The President said the scheme, in which legislators purportedly demand cash from state officials appearing before parliamentary committees, is undermining the credibility of the National Assembly and Senate. “We are not going to shame them; we are going to arrest them,” he told lawmakers, adding that both bribe-givers and recipients would be held to account. Ruto also broadened his anti-graft message to the health sector, vowing to pursue hospitals and medical professionals he said were siphoning funds from the newly established Social Health Authority (SHA). He argued that corruption in Parliament and public services is eroding trust in government and diverting resources meant for counties and ordinary Kenyans.
