An American Airlines Airbus A321 operating as Flight 1665 returned safely to Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport on Wednesday morning after smoke and bursts of flame were seen coming from its left engine just minutes after departure, the airline and the Federal Aviation Administration said. The Charlotte-bound jet lifted off at 8:11 a.m. local time and landed roughly nine minutes later. American Airlines reported that all 153 passengers and six crew members deplaned normally with no injuries. The aircraft taxied to the gate under its own power and has been removed from service for inspection and repairs. The FAA has opened an investigation, describing the incident as an “engine issue.” Video taken from the ground and from inside the cabin showed sparks and loud bangs, which aviation specialists told local media are consistent with a compressor stall. Airport operations were not affected.
