Barnard College has reached a settlement in a lawsuit filed by Jewish students who alleged the institution failed to adequately address antisemitism on campus, violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As part of the agreement, Barnard will appoint a Title VI coordinator with powers similar to those of a Title IX coordinator and follow guidance from the Office for Civil Rights to consider the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. The college also agreed to ban masks at protests, enforce protest restrictions, refuse to meet or engage with the pro-Palestinian student group CUAD and its affiliates, and prohibit the use of its endowment funds to target Israel. Representatives for the Jewish students, including the law firm Kasowitz LLP, highlighted these measures as steps to combat what was described as pervasive antisemitism on campus. The settlement reflects Barnard’s commitment to ensuring equal treatment for its Jewish student population.
