Barnard College has settled a lawsuit filed by Jewish students who alleged pervasive antisemitism and violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 due to the college's failure to adequately address antisemitism on campus. As part of the settlement, Barnard agreed to implement several measures, including hiring a Title VI coordinator with powers comparable to a Title IX coordinator, following Office for Civil Rights (OCR) guidance to consider the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, banning masks at protests, enforcing protest restrictions, and refusing to meet or engage with the pro-Palestinian student group known as the Coalition for University Accountability and Divestment (CUAD) or its spinoffs. Additionally, the college committed to barring the use of its endowment funds to target Israel. The lawsuit had described Barnard as a center of academic antisemitism, and the settlement aims to address systemic issues raised by the plaintiffs.
