The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is facing a federal lawsuit filed by two Jewish students and an instructor alleging that the university and a tenured professor created and failed to address a hostile antisemitic environment on campus. The plaintiffs claim violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, citing harassment including doxing, antisemitic social media attacks, and mass emails. The lawsuit contends that antisemitism intensified following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks in Israel and accuses MIT officials of standing idly by as the campus became a breeding ground for antisemitism. Separately, Barnard College settled a lawsuit brought by Jewish students alleging pervasive antisemitism and civil rights violations. As part of the settlement, Barnard agreed to establish a Title VI coordinator with powers similar to a Title IX coordinator, ban masks at protests, refuse to meet with a pro-Palestinian student group known as CUAD, enforce protest restrictions, and prohibit the use of its endowment to target Israel. These measures aim to address antisemitism on campus and ensure equal treatment for Jewish students. Additionally, an Israeli chemist has filed a lawsuit against Stanford University over alleged antisemitic discrimination that led to his resignation.
