Six Lebanese army engineers were killed and at least two others injured on 9 August when munitions detonated inside a Hezbollah-linked facility in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon, according to a statement from the Lebanese Presidency citing the Army Commander. The troops were removing and disabling a cannon and other ordnance left from recent hostilities when the explosion occurred. United Nations peacekeepers were dispatched to the scene alongside additional army units to secure the area, local media reported. The blast came amid an escalation in Israeli military activity across Lebanon. Since 6 August, Israeli warplanes and drones have conducted repeated strikes on southern and eastern regions, including Bekaa, Bint Jbeil and Nabatieh governorates. A drone strike near the Syrian border in the Bekaa Valley on 7 August killed five people and wounded ten, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry, while a separate strike in the coastal town of Ansariyeh on 8 August left one dead. Israeli aircraft also targeted vehicles near Ainatha and Aitaroun in Bint Jbeil on 9 August and carried out multiple low-intensity attacks on villages along the Blue Line earlier in the week. No Israeli casualties have been reported. Beirut has accused Israel of violating the 2024 cease-fire, but Jerusalem has not commented publicly on the latest incidents.
