Mexico’s Secretaría del Trabajo y Previsión Social (STPS) condemned Uber’s decision to raise ride-hailing fares by as much as 7%, calling the move “unilateral” and “irresponsible” and saying it lacks any economic justification tied to the country’s recent labor reform for digital-platform workers. The ministry said Uber had previously agreed, during negotiations over the reform and the launch of a mandatory pilot program, not to pass potential compliance costs on to drivers or passengers. STPS argued that the company’s action violates those commitments and comes only two weeks after the pilot began, before any concrete data exist on the reform’s financial impact. Profeco, the federal consumer-protection agency, announced it will coordinate with STPS to monitor Uber’s pricing nationwide and sanction any “irregular or unjustified” policy that harms users. Both agencies urged the company and other platforms to honor earlier agreements and avoid measures that could erode household budgets or workers’ earnings.
