Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to establish a national regulatory framework for motorcycle use, citing an increase in accidents involving motorcycles across the country. Her administration is collaborating with the 32 states to define rules, sanctions, and enhance road safety education. This initiative responds in part to the illegal operation of motorcycle taxis via applications such as Didi and Uber, which continue to offer services despite being prohibited in Mexico City. The urgency of regulation was underscored by a recent fatal accident on Avenida Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, where a woman passenger died after a motorcycle taxi crashed. Following this incident, the Mexico City Ministry of Mobility (Semovi) declared it would take legal action against platforms providing unauthorized motorcycle taxi services. Data from Semovi indicates that over 7,500 motorcycle accidents have occurred this year, resulting in 54 deaths. Federal Deputy Laura Ballesteros has called for a ban on motorcycle taxi services due to safety concerns. The government aims to curb illegal motorcycle taxi operations and reduce traffic accidents through coordinated national legislation and enforcement.
