Mexican Olympic diver Iván “Pollo” García said in the podcast “La Capitana” that his partner, two-time Olympic medalist Paola Espinosa, was pressured by former national coach Ma Jin to keep a long-running romantic relationship with teammate Rommel Pacheco. García alleged the arrangement aimed to prevent Pacheco from falling into depression and losing competitive form, even though it reportedly harmed Espinosa’s own mental state and training schedule. Espinosa and Pacheco were a couple for about 13 years and became engaged shortly before the London 2012 Games, but never married. Their relationship ended during preparations for Rio 2016. Pacheco, now president of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE), has previously described the liaison as a youthful romance and has not publicly addressed the coercion claim. Ma Jin also has not commented. The disclosure renews scrutiny of coaching practices and athlete welfare in Mexican elite sports, particularly because one of the figures involved now oversees federal sports policy. Neither CONADE nor Mexico’s Olympic Committee has responded to requests for comment reported by local media.
