On August 11, 2025, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum officially installed the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform, appointing Pablo Gómez Álvarez as its head. The commission is a temporary body tasked with reviewing and proposing changes to Mexico's electoral system. It will organize public debates and forums across various cities, including sessions at the Secretariat of the Interior (SEGOB), to engage citizens, academia, civil society, and political organizations. While invited to participate with a voice, certain groups such as electoral councilors will not have voting rights. The commission's agenda covers political freedoms, party systems, campaign financing and oversight, voting effectiveness, electoral propaganda, electoral authorities, and mechanisms like popular consultations and recall processes. A national survey is planned for October 2025, with findings to be presented to President Sheinbaum in January 2026. The commission also aims to open discussions to new political parties and independent candidacies, reflecting Sheinbaum's call to broaden democratic participation. Arturo Zaldívar is also involved in the commission. The reform initiative has drawn attention from opposition parties, including the PRI, which has expressed concerns about its potential impact. Pablo Gómez emphasized the commission's commitment to advancing the Fourth Transformation (4T) agenda and conducting inclusive consultations. The commission will utilize an online platform to collect citizen proposals alongside in-person forums. The electoral reform is expected to be formally presented in 2026.
