Between August 20 and 23, 2025, Mexico City experienced a series of intense weather events characterized by heavy rains, hail, and electrical activity. The Secretaría de Gestión Integral de Riesgos y Protección Civil (SGIRPC) issued multiple weather alerts, escalating from yellow and orange to a red alert specifically for the Azcapotzalco borough due to the severity of the conditions. The alerts affected several boroughs including Álvaro Obregón, Coyoacán, Cuajimalpa, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa, Magdalena Contreras, Tlalpan, Xochimilco, and Cuauhtémoc. These weather conditions led to disruptions such as slow metro services on lines 2, 3, 8, 9, A, and 12, flight delays at Mexico City's airport, and closures of central lanes on Paseo de la Reforma. The heavy rains caused flooding and water accumulation in neighborhoods like Centro, Doctores, Guerrero, Paseo de la Reforma, and Avenida Hidalgo. In Querétaro, a severe storm resulted in two fatalities and significant damage, particularly in the Peñuelas area. Additionally, the state of Morelos suffered intense rainfall causing major flooding, damage to 190 homes, and necessitating the rescue of 28 trapped individuals. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, avoid crossing flooded streets, and stay updated on weather developments as the adverse conditions were expected to continue into Saturday, August 23.
