Mexican tennis player Renata Zarazúa, ranked No. 82 in the world, achieved a historic upset by defeating sixth-seeded Madison Keys in the first round of the 2025 US Open. Zarazúa won the match 6-7(10-12), 7-6(7-3), 7-5 after a nearly three-hour battle on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court. Keys, the Australian Open champion and one of the top 10 seeds, was two points away from victory before Zarazúa mounted a comeback from a set and 3-0 down. This victory marks Zarazúa's first win over a top-10 opponent and makes her the first Mexican player in over 30 years to defeat a top-10 ranked rival at the US Open. It is also only the second time in three decades that an American woman seeded in the top 10 has lost in the first round of the tournament. Zarazúa is the only Mexican player, male or female, currently ranked in the WTA top 100. The win advances her to the second round of the Grand Slam event and is considered the most important victory of her career.
