Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has accused the National Electoral Institute (INE) of overstepping its authority by commenting on the validity of votes in the recent judicial election, a responsibility she says belongs solely to the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF). In response, Sheinbaum announced plans to introduce a comprehensive electoral reform proposal that includes reducing the budgets of the INE and political parties, eliminating plurinominal legislative seats, and modifying the proportional representation system. She emphasized that the reform will not compromise the INE's autonomy but aims to make elections more cost-effective and improve transparency. Additionally, Sheinbaum's administration is considering allowing INE councilors to be elected by popular vote. The president also addressed the controversy surrounding the INE's sanctions against judicial candidates who appeared in so-called "acordeones" during the election, describing the INE's decisions as contradictory and stating that her government will await the TEPJF's ruling on the matter. Furthermore, Sheinbaum clarified that the biometric CURP initiative promoted by her government is voluntary and will not replace the electoral roll or nominal list managed by the INE, ensuring continued collaboration on data security.
