Ana Amelí García Gámez, a 19-year-old biology student from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), has been missing since July 12, 2025, after last being seen in the Ajusco mountain area near Pico del Águila in Tlalpan, Mexico City. Her mother, Vanessa Gámez, has repeatedly appealed for help, including visiting Palacio Nacional to request assistance from President Claudia Sheinbaum. Despite ongoing search operations involving over 900 personnel from Mexico City government, Tlalpan authorities, the National Guard, and volunteers, no trace of Ana Amelí has been found. The search has expanded beyond Ajusco to neighboring states Morelos and the State of Mexico, as the initial hypothesis that she remained in the mountain area is being reconsidered. Family members and feminist groups have organized protests and marches demanding accelerated and expanded search efforts and federal intervention. President Sheinbaum confirmed that the federal Security Cabinet is supporting the search and that the Ministry of the Interior is maintaining contact with the family. Separately, Irma Hernández Cruz, a 62-year-old retired teacher and taxi driver from Álamo Temapache, Veracruz, was found dead after being kidnapped on July 18, 2025. She was forced by a criminal group to record a video demanding extortion payments from other taxi drivers. Veracruz authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with her death. Governor Rocío Nahle stated that Irma Hernández died from a heart attack induced by violence and criticized those who turned the case into a scandal. Medical examiners reported multiple internal and external injuries centered on her heart. President Sheinbaum expressed condolences over Irma Hernández's death and supported Governor Nahle's handling of the case, emphasizing that justice will be pursued and there will be no impunity. In another matter, families of the 43 students who disappeared in Ayotzinapa in 2014 met with President Sheinbaum at Palacio Nacional. The president committed to presenting new lines of investigation on September 4, 2025, aimed at advancing the search for the missing students. Families expressed skepticism about the current fiscal leadership and the previous "historical truth" narrative. President Sheinbaum acknowledged the families' pain and said that new investigative tools and methods are being employed to uncover the truth.
