Sheinbaum Announces Reyes Will Replace Gomez in Financial Intelligence Unit 🏦💼
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has nominated Omar Reyes Colmenares to head the Financial Intelligence Unit, the agency that tracks illicit financial flows and supports anti-money-laundering prosecutions. Reyes, a former director of prison operations at the federal Security Ministry and an ally of Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch, will require confirmation by the Permanent Commission of Congress. Reyes would replace veteran politician Pablo Gómez Álvarez, who led the UIF since 2021. Sheinbaum has reassigned Gómez to chair a newly created Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform, tasked with delivering a comprehensive proposal to overhaul Mexico’s electoral rules and party financing. The government said the commission will conduct a “deep diagnosis” of the current voting system in consultation with lawmakers, academics and civil-society groups. Sheinbaum has previously signaled support for measures to cut election costs and adjust the system of proportional-representation lawmakers.
