President Claudia Sheinbaum said her administration will not shield any politician or official under criminal investigation, after Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office issued an arrest warrant and an Interpol red notice for Hernán Bermúdez Requena, former public-security secretary of Tabasco. Bermúdez, accused of co-founding the armed group “La Barredora,” left the country on 26 January and is believed to be abroad. The case has revived scrutiny of Senator and ex-Tabasco governor Adán Augusto López, who appointed Bermúdez in 2019. Sheinbaum told reporters on 21 July that if prosecutors have evidence linking López to criminal activity, “adelante,” while cautioning against what she called a media “lynching” without proof. Tabasco’s current governor, Javier May, also urged Bermúdez to face justice, underscoring internal pressure within the ruling Morena party. Separately, the federal government filed a defamation suit in Mexico against Jeffrey Lichtman, attorney for jailed cartel figure Ovidio Guzmán. Sheinbaum, who earlier labeled Lichtman’s remarks about alleged government complicity as “disrespectful,” said the courts—not political rhetoric—will determine the outcome. Sheinbaum’s repeated pledge that “we do not cover up anyone” seeks to distance her administration from predecessors tainted by security scandals, while reinforcing her message that investigations will proceed regardless of party affiliation.
