A passenger convoy of Mexico’s state-run Tren Maya suffered a rail incident on 19 August when Train 304, travelling from Cancún to Mérida, partially left the track while entering the Izamal station in Yucatán at low speed. The unit brushed against stationary Train 307, prompting an immediate evacuation of 261 passengers, all of whom were later confirmed unharmed. Director General Óscar David Lozano Águila told reporters that only one bogie of the third carriage derailed after an unexpected movement in the track-switch mechanism. He described the event as a “percance de vía” rather than a full derailment, adding that built-in emergency brakes functioned as designed and prevented more serious damage. Rail operations resumed within hours; the following scheduled service departed with a 45-minute delay after crews cleared the line. Passengers were redirected by bus or a special relief train to their destinations. Lozano said the operator will install mechanical clamps and implement a second verification system on the switch apparatus while the route continues to run normally. The Fiscalía General de la República and a Commission Dictaminadora de Accidentes Ferroviarios have opened parallel investigations to determine the root cause and assign liability, which will also trigger insurance claims for material losses. The Izamal event is the second safety incident reported since the 1,554-kilometre tourist railway opened in late 2023.
